Mangalyaan, India’s first Mars Orbiter Mission was launched by Indian Space Research Organization has successfully completed its 3 years of journey. The probe was expected to be in existence for a period of six months but surprisingly it has extended its life and is still alive today. That’s one of the biggest space achievement India has conquered.

The probe entered the Mars orbit in 2014 taking a weight of 40kg fuel. Other than orbiting the red planet, the mission made two huge interchanges in the orbit. Firstly, the probe changed its orbit and speed to avoid a huge comet hit while the second challenge was to save our planet from the total solar eclipse that was seen in January.

These two were the biggest threat to our planet. Initially, when the Mangalyaan was blasted off from Earth, it had retained its original state for 1 hour 40 minutes with the help of batteries. Later, it needed a continues the supply of energy from the sun.

Mangalyaan completed its 388 orbits around the Mars in June. It clicked around 715 photographs of the red planet that included the images during whiteout and blackout period where the connection between our planet and Mangalyaan was totally lost for more than 14 days.

The probe was launched on 5th November 2013 from Sriharikota located in the state of Andhra Pradesh. The programme was one of the best tools for research and development process of the space and paved various opportunities to many researchers.

Around five scientific tools were installed in the satellite that included Thermal Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (TIS), Methane Sensor for Mars (MSM), Lyman Alpha Photometer (LAP), Mars Color Camera (MCC) and Mars Exospheric Neutral Composition (MENCA).

Mangalyaan is considered to be the most efficient probe when it comes to its expenditure. It is the cheapest probe sent to space for conquering the red planet till date. The Indian government has planned to launch the second Mangalyaan mission and will start working very soon for the same.
